Understanding What You Say in the Prayer: Q&A
The phrases of the prayer, from the opening takbir to the taslim, with their meanings. Also covers Surat al-Fatihah verse by verse and the four Quls (al-Kafirun, al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq, an-Nas). Rulings follow what is common among the scholars of the Salafi da'wah (Ibn Baz, Ibn al-Uthaymin, al-Albani and the Permanent Committee). Where they differ, it is noted. Answer each question first, then check. 187 questions.
Before you start: Why the meanings matter, and the levels of obligation
Why should I learn the meanings of what I say in the prayer?
Because khushu' (humble presence of heart) is what success in the prayer depends on: "Successful indeed are the believers, those who are humble (khashi'un) in their prayers." [23:1-2] It is very hard to be present with words you do not understand.
Which hadith shows that people get different amounts of reward from the same prayer?
The Prophet said a man may finish his prayer and only a tenth of it is written for him, or a ninth, an eighth, a seventh... down to a half. (Abu Dawud, from Ammar b. Yasir; hasan according to al-Albani.) The reward follows how present the heart was.
Is a prayer invalid if I don't understand the Arabic?
No. The prayer is valid if it is done correctly. But the reward and the effect of the prayer on you are far greater when you understand it.
Where do we take the description of the prayer from?
From the Prophet himself: "Pray as you have seen me pray." (Bukhari) That is why the wording of the phrases is kept exactly as he taught it, without additions.
What are the three levels of things in the prayer, according to the method most of our scholars follow?
(1) Pillars (arkan): the prayer is not valid without them, whether left on purpose or by forgetting; if forgotten, you must go back and do it. (2) Obligations (wajibat): left on purpose, the prayer is invalid; left by forgetting, you make sujud as-sahw. (3) Sunnahs: the prayer is valid without them, but you lose their reward.
Which spoken phrases are pillars?
The opening takbir (takbirat al-ihram), reciting al-Fatihah, the final tashahhud, sending salah on the Prophet in the final tashahhud (according to the Hanbali position held by Ibn al-Uthaymin and others), and the taslim.
Which spoken phrases are obligations (wajibat)?
The takbirs when moving between positions, "Sami'Allahu liman hamidah" (for the imam and the one praying alone), "Rabbana wa lakal-hamd", "Subhana Rabbiyal-Adhim" once in ruku, "Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la" once in sujud, "Rabbighfir li" between the two prostrations, and the first tashahhud.
Is this division agreed on by all scholars?
No. It is the Hanbali method, which Ibn Baz and Ibn al-Uthaymin explain in their books. Some scholars (and some of al-Albani's positions) classify some of these differently. The point is to know which phrases carry the most weight.
Chapter 1: The Opening Takbir (Takbirat al-Ihram)
What do you say to begin the prayer?
الله أكبر — Allahu Akbar.
What does "Allahu Akbar" mean?
"Allah is Greater", meaning greater than everything: in His Self, His Names, His Attributes and His Actions. It is not just "Allah is great". The comparative form means nothing compares to Him.
Why is it called takbirat al-ihram?
Ihram comes from haram (forbidden). Once you say it, things that were allowed before (eating, talking, turning away) become forbidden until you finish.
Which hadith shows that the takbir opens the prayer and the taslim closes it?
"The key to the prayer is purification, it is made forbidden (tahrim) by the takbir, and it is made permissible again (tahlil) by the taslim." (Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi, from Ali; authentic)
What should "Allahu Akbar" do to your heart as you enter the prayer?
Remind you that whatever you were busy with (work, phone, worries) is smaller than the One you are now standing before. Everything else is put behind you.
Can you open the prayer with any other wording, like "Allahu al-Akbar" or "Allahu A'dham"?
No. It must be "Allahu Akbar", the wording the Prophet used.
Is the takbir said aloud or silently, and does it matter if you only think it?
It must be pronounced with the tongue (at least so that you would hear yourself in a quiet place). The imam says it aloud so those behind him can follow. Only thinking it is not enough.
Is the takbir said when moving between positions an obligation too?
Yes, according to the Hanbali position (Ibn Baz, Ibn al-Uthaymin): every takbir when going down or rising, except the takbir before ruku for a latecomer, which some say the opening takbir covers. Each time you say it, you renew the meaning: Allah is greater than all else.
Chapter 2: The Opening Supplication (Du'a al-Istiftah) — Sunnah
Is the opening du'a obligatory?
No, it is sunnah. Several authentic forms are reported, and it is good to alternate between them.
What is the most commonly used form?
(Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi; authentic. Umar used to say it aloud to teach people, as reported in Muslim.)
What does "Subhanaka Allahumma" mean?
"How perfect You are, O Allah", meaning I declare You free of every flaw and deficiency. Tasbih is negation: removing from Allah anything that does not befit Him.
What does "wa bihamdika" add?
"And with Your praise." After declaring Him free of all flaws (negation), you affirm all perfection for Him (praise). This is the same pattern you studied: negate the deficiency, affirm the perfection.
What does "wa tabaraka-smuka" mean?
"And blessed is Your Name." Blessing (barakah) comes through mentioning Allah's Name, which is why we say Bismillah over food and actions.
What does "wa ta'ala jadduka" mean?
"And exalted is Your majesty (or greatness)." Jadd here means His grandeur and majesty, above everything.
What does "wa la ilaha ghayruk" mean?
"And there is no one worthy of worship other than You." It is the tawhid of worship in the opening of the prayer.
What is the second famous form, and where is it reported?
اللهم باعد بيني وبين خطاياي كما باعدت بين المشرق والمغرب، اللهم نقني من الخطايا كما ينقى الثوب الأبيض من الدنس، اللهم اغسل خطاياي بالماء والثلج والبرد — (Bukhari and Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah)
What does it mean?
"O Allah, put a distance between me and my sins as You have put distance between the East and the West. O Allah, purify me of my sins as a white garment is cleaned of dirt. O Allah, wash my sins away with water, snow and hail."
Why distance, then purification, then washing?
Distance is for sins you have not done yet (keep me far from them). Purification and washing are for sins already done. Snow and hail are cold, so scholars mention they also cool the heat of sins. A white garment shows every stain, so it is the strongest example of complete cleaning.
Chapter 3: Seeking Refuge (Isti'adhah) and the Basmalah
What do you say before reciting, and what does it mean?
أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم — A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim. "I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed (stoned, driven away)."
What is the evidence for seeking refuge before recitation?
"So when you recite the Qur'an, seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed." [16:98]
What does "a'udhu" mean exactly?
"I take shelter and protection." You are admitting that you cannot protect yourself from Satan, so you turn to the only One who can.
What does "rajim" mean?
Expelled and driven far away from Allah's mercy, and also stoned (pelted).
What is the longer authentic form?
أعوذ بالله السميع العليم من الشيطان الرجيم، من همزه ونفخه ونفثه — "I seek refuge with Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from Satan the accursed, from his hamz, his nafkh and his nafth." (Abu Dawud and others; authentic)
What are hamz, nafkh and nafth?
As explained by a narrator of the hadith: hamz is a kind of madness (fits), nafkh is pride and arrogance, and nafth is (blameworthy) poetry.
Why is seeking refuge needed right before reciting?
Satan attacks hardest when you turn to Allah. He wants to distract you with thoughts so you lose the meaning of what you recite.
What is the basmalah, and what does it mean?
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم — Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim. "In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Ever-Merciful." It means: I begin (my recitation) with the Name of Allah, seeking His help and blessing.
Is it said aloud or silently?
Silently, according to the stronger position followed by Ibn Baz, Ibn al-Uthaymin and al-Albani, based on the hadith of Anas that the Prophet, Abu Bakr and Umar did not recite it aloud. (Muslim)
Is the basmalah a verse of al-Fatihah?
The scholars differ. Ibn al-Uthaymin held that it is not a verse of al-Fatihah but a separate verse placed before surahs, and pointed to the hadith qudsi in the next chapter, which starts the division with "Al-hamdu lillah". Others count it as the first verse.
What is the difference between ar-Rahman and ar-Rahim?
Many scholars say ar-Rahman is the wide mercy that reaches all creation, believers and disbelievers, and ar-Rahim is the special mercy for the believers: "And He is ever Merciful (Rahim) to the believers." [33:43] Both are real Attributes of mercy, not "an intention to reward".
Chapter 4: Surat al-Fatihah, Verse by Verse
Why is reciting al-Fatihah a pillar of the prayer?
"There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book." (Bukhari and Muslim, from Ubadah b. as-Samit)
Must the follower behind the imam recite it?
The scholars differ. Ibn Baz and Ibn al-Uthaymin held that it is obligatory for everyone, even behind the imam in the loud prayers. Al-Albani held that the follower listens silently in the loud prayers and recites it in the quiet ones. Follow the evidence your trusted teachers consider stronger.
Which hadith qudsi shows that al-Fatihah is a conversation with Allah?
Allah said: "I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves, and My servant will have what he asks for." Then He answers each verse. (Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah) Here "the prayer" means al-Fatihah.
What does Allah say when you recite "Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin"?
"My servant has praised Me."
What does Allah say when you recite "Ar-Rahmanir-Rahim"?
"My servant has extolled Me (spoken highly of Me)."
What does Allah say when you recite "Maliki yawmid-din"?
"My servant has glorified Me (declared My majesty)."
What does Allah say when you recite "Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'in"?
"This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will have what he asks for."
What does Allah say when you recite the last two verses?
"This is for My servant, and My servant will have what he asks for."
How should this hadith change the way you recite?
Pause briefly after each verse (the Prophet recited verse by verse, stopping at the end of each one), knowing that Allah is answering you.
Verse 2: What does "الحمد لله رب العالمين" (Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin) mean?
"All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all that exists."
What is hamd, and how is it different from shukr (thanks)?
Hamd is praising Allah with love and honour for His perfect Attributes and for His favours. Shukr is thanking Him for favours. So hamd is wider: you praise Allah even for what He is, not only for what He gives.
Why "al-hamd" with "al-"?
It covers all praise, every kind of it. All complete praise belongs to Allah alone.
What does "Rabb" mean?
The Lord: the One who creates, owns and manages everything and takes care of it. It points to Tawhid ar-Rububiyyah.
Who are "al-'alamin"?
Everything besides Allah: humans, jinn, angels, animals and all other creation. They are called 'alam because they are a sign ('alamah) pointing to their Creator.
Verse 3: What does "الرحمن الرحيم" mean here, after "Lord of the worlds"?
"The Most Merciful, the Ever-Merciful." After mentioning His Lordship, which could cause fear, Allah mentions His mercy, so the servant has both fear and hope. His Lordship over us is a Lordship of mercy.
Verse 4: What does "مالك يوم الدين" (Maliki yawmid-din) mean?
"Owner (Master) of the Day of Recompense." Yawm ad-din is the Day of Judgment, when every soul is repaid for its deeds.
What are the two recitations of this verse?
"Maliki" (Owner) and "Maliki" with a short a, "Maliki" (King). Both are authentic recitations, and together they show that Allah is both the Owner and the King of that Day.
Allah owns everything now too, so why mention that Day specifically?
Because on that Day no one will claim any ownership or authority at all. "Whose is the dominion this Day? It is Allah's, the One, the Irresistible." [40:16]
What feeling should this verse produce?
Fear and preparation. It reminds you that you will stand before Him and be repaid.
Verse 5: What does "إياك نعبد وإياك نستعين" (Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'in) mean?
"You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help."
Why does "Iyyaka" (You) come first in Arabic?
Putting the object before the verb gives restriction (hasr): You and no one else. It is the meaning of "La ilaha illa Allah" in a single phrase.
Which category of tawhid does "Iyyaka na'budu" express?
Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah (worship). "Iyyaka nasta'in" includes reliance (tawakkul) on Allah alone, which rests on knowing He is the only Lord.
Why is worship mentioned before asking for help?
Worship is the purpose you were created for, and asking for help is the means to fulfil it. The goal comes before the means. It also teaches that you cannot even worship Him without His help.
Why "we" (plural) and not "I"?
Scholars mention that you are joining yourself to all the servants of Allah who worship Him, and also that it is a humble way of speaking, not singling yourself out.
Is it shirk to ask a living person for help with something he can do?
No. Asking a living, present person for what he is able to do (like carrying a bag) is allowed. What is reserved for Allah is asking for what only Allah can do, or calling on the dead or absent.
Verse 6: What does "اهدنا الصراط المستقيم" (Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqim) mean?
"Guide us to the Straight Path." The Straight Path is Islam: following the Qur'an and the Sunnah.
Why does a Muslim who is already guided ask for guidance in every rak'ah?
Because guidance has levels: guidance of knowledge (being shown the truth) and guidance of action (being given the ability to follow it). You also need firmness on it until death, and an increase in it. No one is ever free of needing guidance.
Why is this the greatest du'a?
Allah taught it to us after we praised Him, so it is the request He chose for us. Every good of this life and the next depends on being guided.
Verse 7: What does "صراط الذين أنعمت عليهم" (Siratal-ladhina an'amta 'alayhim) mean?
"The path of those whom You have favoured."
Who are "those whom You have favoured"?
"The Prophets, the truthful (siddiqin), the martyrs and the righteous. What excellent companions they are!" [4:69]
What does "غير المغضوب عليهم" (ghayril-maghdubi 'alayhim) mean?
"Not of those who earned (Your) anger."
What does "ولا الضالين" (wa lad-dallin) mean?
"Nor of those who went astray."
Who are "those who earned anger" and "those who went astray"?
The Prophet explained: those who earned anger are the Jews, and those astray are the Christians. (At-Tirmidhi, from Adi b. Hatim; authentic)
What is the general lesson behind that?
Those who earned anger knew the truth and did not act on it. Those who went astray acted without knowledge. A Muslim asks to be kept from both: to have knowledge and to act on it. As some of the Salaf said, whoever of our scholars becomes corrupt resembles the Jews, and whoever of our worshippers becomes corrupt resembles the Christians.
What does "Amin" mean, and is it part of al-Fatihah?
"O Allah, answer (our du'a)." It is not part of al-Fatihah. It is sunnah to say it after the last verse, aloud in the loud prayers.
What is the virtue of saying "Amin"?
"When the imam says Amin, say Amin, for whoever's Amin coincides with the Amin of the angels, his previous sins are forgiven." (Bukhari and Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah)
Why does "Amin" make sense right after al-Fatihah?
Because the last part of al-Fatihah is a du'a (guide us, keep us from the path of the misguided), so you seal it by asking Allah to answer.
Chapter 5: The Bowing (Ruku)
What do you say in ruku, and what is its ruling?
سبحان ربي العظيم — Subhana Rabbiyal-Adhim. Saying it once is obligatory (wajib); three times is the recommended minimum of completeness. The Prophet said it in his ruku. (Muslim, from Hudhayfah)
What does it mean?
"How perfect is my Lord, the Most Great." You declare your Lord free of every flaw, and you describe Him with greatness.
Why "the Most Great" in ruku?
Ruku is a position of humbling yourself, bowing your back. In that position you declare the greatness of the One you bow to.
What should be done in ruku according to the Prophet's instruction?
"As for ruku, glorify the Lord in it. As for sujud, strive hard in du'a in it, as it is likely to be answered." (Muslim, from Ibn Abbas)
Can you recite Qur'an in ruku or sujud?
No. The Prophet forbade reciting the Qur'an while bowing or prostrating (same hadith in Muslim).
What other authentic phrase can be said in ruku and sujud?
سبحانك اللهم ربنا وبحمدك، اللهم اغفر لي — "How perfect You are, O Allah, our Lord, and with Your praise. O Allah, forgive me." (Bukhari and Muslim, from Aishah) Aishah said he did this to act on the command of Surat an-Nasr: "Glorify the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness." [110:3]
What is "Subbuhun Quddus, Rabbul-mala'ikati war-ruh", and what does it mean?
سبوح قدوس رب الملائكة والروح — "Perfect (Justly Glorified), Holy (Most Pure), Lord of the angels and of the Spirit (Jibril)." (Muslim, from Aishah) As-Subbuh is one of the Names from the Sunnah in your earlier study, and al-Quddus means the One free of all defects.
Chapter 6: Rising From Ruku
What does the imam or the one praying alone say while rising?
سمع الله لمن حمده — Sami'Allahu liman hamidah. This is obligatory for them.
What does it mean?
"Allah hears the one who praises Him." Hearing here means hearing with acceptance and answering, as when we say "Allah heard my du'a". It is like saying: Allah responds to whoever praises Him.
Does the follower behind the imam say it too?
According to the position followed by Ibn Baz and Ibn al-Uthaymin, the follower says only "Rabbana wa lakal-hamd", based on "When the imam says Sami'Allahu liman hamidah, say: Rabbana wa lakal-hamd." (Bukhari and Muslim) Some scholars, including al-Albani, held that the follower says both.
What is said once standing upright, and what does it mean?
ربنا ولك الحمد — Rabbana wa lakal-hamd. "Our Lord, and to You belongs all praise." It is an obligation.
What are its four authentic forms?
"Rabbana lakal-hamd", "Rabbana wa lakal-hamd", "Allahumma Rabbana lakal-hamd" and "Allahumma Rabbana wa lakal-hamd". Using different ones at different times follows the Sunnah.
How does this connect with "Sami'Allahu liman hamidah"?
The imam announces that Allah answers the one who praises Him, and the response right away is praise. It is like accepting the invitation.
Which addition did over thirty angels race to write down?
حمدًا كثيرًا طيبًا مباركًا فيه — "Praise that is abundant, good and blessed." A man said it behind the Prophet, who said he saw over thirty angels racing to see who would write it first. (Bukhari, from Rifa'ah b. Rafi')
What does "mil'as-samawati wa mil'al-ard" add?
ملء السماوات وملء الأرض وملء ما شئت من شيء بعد — "(Praise) filling the heavens, filling the earth, and filling whatever else You will after that." (Muslim) It describes how vast the praise you mean to give is.
Chapter 7: The Prostration (Sujud)
What do you say in sujud, and what is its ruling?
سبحان ربي الأعلى — Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la. Once is obligatory; three times is the recommended minimum. (Muslim, from Hudhayfah)
What does it mean?
"How perfect is my Lord, the Most High."
Why "the Most High" in sujud specifically?
Sujud is the lowest position a person can take, with the face (the most honoured part of the body) on the ground. In your lowest position, you declare the highness of your Lord. It also affirms His Attribute of 'uluw (being above His creation).
Which hadith shows the value of sujud?
"The closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so increase your du'a (in it)." (Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah)
Can you make du'a in sujud in your own words?
Yes, after the obligatory tasbih. It is better to use du'as from the Qur'an and Sunnah, and scholars say it is fine to ask for your needs of this world and the next, in the obligatory prayer as well. Many scholars allow non-Arabic du'a in sujud for someone who cannot say it in Arabic, though others restrict this in the obligatory prayer; ask your teacher.
On how many parts of the body do you prostrate?
Seven: the forehead with the nose, the two hands, the two knees and the toes of both feet. (Bukhari and Muslim, from Ibn Abbas)
Chapter 8: Sitting Between the Two Prostrations
What do you say between the two prostrations, and what is its ruling?
رب اغفر لي، رب اغفر لي — Rabbighfir li, Rabbighfir li. "My Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me." Saying it once is obligatory according to the Hanbali position. (Abu Dawud, an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah, from Hudhayfah; authentic)
What does maghfirah (forgiveness) mean?
It comes from mighfar, the helmet that covers and protects the head. Forgiveness means Allah covers the sin and protects you from its punishment.
What longer du'a is also reported here?
اللهم اغفر لي وارحمني واجبرني واهدني وارزقني — Allahummaghfir li, warhamni, wajburni, wahdini, warzuqni. (At-Tirmidhi and others, from Ibn Abbas)
What does each part mean?
Forgive me (cover my sins), have mercy on me (grant me good and bring me to Paradise), mend me (repair what is broken in my affairs, my weakness and my shortcomings), guide me (to the truth and to acting on it), and provide for me (in my religion and my worldly life).
Why ask for forgiveness here, in the middle of the prayer?
Because even while worshipping you fall short, and there is no time you are free from needing Allah's forgiveness.
Chapter 9: The Tashahhud (At-Tahiyyat)
What is the wording of the tashahhud taught by Ibn Mas'ud?
التحيات لله والصلوات والطيبات، السلام عليك أيها النبي ورحمة الله وبركاته، السلام علينا وعلى عباد الله الصالحين، أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدًا عبده ورسوله (Bukhari and Muslim)
Transliteration?
At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat.
What are the rulings of the first and final tashahhud?
The first tashahhud (in a three- or four-rak'ah prayer) is an obligation; if forgotten, sujud as-sahw makes up for it. The final tashahhud is a pillar.
What does "At-tahiyyatu lillah" mean?
"All greetings of honour and glorification belong to Allah." Every word and action that expresses honour and greatness is truly for Him alone.
What does "was-salawat" mean?
"And all prayers." Scholars explain it as the five prayers and all other prayers, or all du'as, or all worship. All of it is for Allah alone.
What does "wat-tayyibat" mean?
"And all good things", meaning good words, good deeds and good descriptions belong to Allah. He is at-Tayyib (the Pure), and He accepts only what is pure. At-Tayyib is another Name from the Sunnah in your earlier study.
What does "As-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh" mean?
"Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings." It is a du'a for him: that Allah keeps him safe from all harm, has mercy on him and blesses him.
Does saying "'alayka" (upon you) mean the Prophet hears us or is present?
No. It is a du'a for him, not a call to him. Ibn al-Uthaymin explains that it is as though he is present in your heart because of your love for him, not that he hears you. Calling on the Prophet for help after his death is not allowed; here we ask Allah for him.
What did the Companions say after the Prophet's death?
Ibn Mas'ud said that after he died they said "As-salamu 'alan-Nabiyy" (Peace be upon the Prophet). (Bukhari) Al-Albani held that this is better after his death. Ibn Baz and Ibn al-Uthaymin held that "As-salamu 'alayka" is fine because it is the wording the Prophet taught. Both are acceptable.
What does "As-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin" mean?
"Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah." "Us" means yourself and those praying with you. Then you include every righteous servant.
Who does "the righteous servants of Allah" reach?
The Prophet said that when you say it, it reaches every righteous servant in the heavens and the earth. (Bukhari and Muslim) That includes angels, Prophets, the Companions, and righteous believers from the past and present.
What lesson is there in that?
Strive to be righteous, so that every Muslim's prayer, in every tashahhud, includes you.
What does "Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah" mean?
"I testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah." To testify (shahadah) means to know it, believe it with certainty in the heart and declare it with the tongue.
What does "wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh" mean?
"And I testify that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger."
Why "his servant" and "His Messenger" together?
"Servant" means he is not to be worshipped, which refutes those who go to extremes about him. "Messenger" means he is not to be denied or ignored, which refutes those who fall short in following him. Both truths are kept in balance.
Why do you point with the index finger during the tashahhud?
It is an authentic Sunnah. Scholars explain it as a sign of tawhid, pointing to the oneness of the One you are calling on. Some narrations mention moving it during du'a; al-Albani held this view, while others hold it is pointed without moving. Both are held by Salafi scholars.
Is it allowed to add "Sayyidina" (our master) before "Muhammad" in the tashahhud?
The Prophet is truly the master of the children of Adam, but the scholars of the Sunnah (including al-Albani) say not to add it in the prayer, because the Prophet taught the exact wording of the tashahhud and the salah on him, and he did not include it. We keep the wording as he taught it.
Chapter 10: Sending Salah on the Prophet (As-Salah al-Ibrahimiyyah)
What is the wording?
(Bukhari and Muslim, from Ka'b b. 'Ujrah)
Transliteration?
What is its ruling in the final tashahhud?
A pillar according to the Hanbali position (Ibn al-Uthaymin). Some scholars hold it is an obligation or a sunnah. Do not leave it.
What does "salah" from Allah upon the Prophet mean?
Abul-'Aliyah said: Allah's salah upon His Prophet is His praise of him before the highest gathering of angels. (Mentioned by al-Bukhari) So you are asking Allah to praise and honour him among the angels.
What does "barik" mean?
"Bless", meaning increase the good for him and make it lasting.
Who are the "Al" (family) of Muhammad?
Scholars explain it as his believing household, and some include all his followers upon his religion. In both cases, only the believers are meant.
Why mention Ibrahim and his family?
Ibrahim is the father of the Prophets and the Friend (Khalil) of Allah, and Allah praised and blessed him and his family greatly. You are asking for the same kind of salah and blessing for Muhammad, whom Allah honoured just as He honoured Ibrahim.
Does "kama" (as You did) mean that Ibrahim's honour is greater?
No. Scholars explain that the comparison is in the kind of favour asked for, or that it is like saying "as You were generous with that one, be generous with this one". It does not mean equal amounts, and the Prophet Muhammad is the best of creation.
What do "Hamidun Majid" mean?
Hamid: the Praiseworthy, deserving all praise for His perfect Attributes and actions. Majid: the Glorious, full of majesty, honour and greatness. These two Names fit the request: you asked for praise and blessing, so you end with the One who is Praised and Glorious.
Chapter 11: The Du'as Before the Taslim
Which four things did the Prophet command us to seek refuge from after the final tashahhud?
اللهم إني أعوذ بك من عذاب جهنم، ومن عذاب القبر، ومن فتنة المحيا والممات، ومن شر فتنة المسيح الدجال — "O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (ad-Dajjal)." (Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah)
How serious is this du'a?
Very serious. The Prophet commanded it, and Tawus ordered his son to repeat his prayer when he left it out. (Muslim) Most scholars hold it is strongly recommended; some hold it is obligatory.
What is "the trial of life"?
Everything in life that can lead you away from the religion: desires (shahawat) and doubts (shubuhat).
What is "the trial of death"?
The trial at the time of death (Satan's last attempt to misguide), and the questioning in the grave.
Why is the Dajjal mentioned on his own?
Because his trial is the greatest from Adam until the Hour. Every Prophet warned his nation of him.
What du'a did the Prophet teach Abu Bakr for his prayer?
اللهم إني ظلمت نفسي ظلمًا كثيرًا، ولا يغفر الذنوب إلا أنت، فاغفر لي مغفرة من عندك، وارحمني إنك أنت الغفور الرحيم (Bukhari and Muslim)
What does it mean?
"O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and no one forgives sins except You. So forgive me with forgiveness from You, and have mercy on me. You are the Oft-Forgiving, the Ever-Merciful."
What does it teach?
If the best of the Companions after the Prophets was taught to say "I have wronged myself greatly", then we are in even more need. You admit your sin, admit Allah alone forgives, ask, then end with the Names that fit the request.
Can you make other du'as at this point?
Yes. After the salah on the Prophet you may choose whatever du'a you like. The Prophet said, "Then let him choose whatever du'a he likes." (Bukhari and Muslim, from Ibn Mas'ud)
Chapter 12: The Taslim
What do you say to end the prayer, and what is its ruling?
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله — As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah, to the right, then the left. It is a pillar.
What does it mean?
"Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah." It is a du'a for safety from all harm and for Allah's mercy.
Who are you greeting?
The angels with you and those praying on your right and left.
Is "as-Salam" also a Name of Allah?
Yes. As-Salam is the One free from every defect and the Giver of safety. The Prophet said, "Allah is as-Salam." (Bukhari and Muslim) So you leave the prayer with a greeting that comes from His Name.
What is said straight after the taslim?
"Astaghfirullah" three times, then "Allahumma antas-Salam wa minkas-salam, tabarakta ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram." (Muslim, from Thawban) "O Allah, You are as-Salam, and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour." Seeking forgiveness right after worship teaches that we still fall short in it.
Chapter 13: Reciting After al-Fatihah, and the Four Quls
Is reciting a surah after al-Fatihah obligatory?
No. It is sunnah in the first two rak'ahs. The prayer is valid without it.
Why do we say "Qul" (Say) when reciting these surahs, if it was a command to the Prophet?
Because we recite the Qur'an exactly as it was revealed. Ubayy b. Ka'b asked the Prophet about the two surahs of refuge, and he said, "It was said to me (Say), so I said it." (Bukhari) The command also includes his nation.
Where does the Sunnah use the Quls in prayer?
Al-Kafirun and al-Ikhlas in the two sunnah rak'ahs before Fajr (Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah) and after Maghrib. In Witr: al-A'la, al-Kafirun and al-Ikhlas (Abu Dawud and an-Nasa'i; authentic). The Prophet also told Uqbah b. Amir to recite the surahs of refuge after every prayer. (Abu Dawud; authentic)
Chapter 14: Surat al-Kafirun (109)
What is the surah?
قل يا أيها الكافرون لا أعبد ما تعبدون ولا أنتم عابدون ما أعبد ولا أنا عابد ما عبدتم ولا أنتم عابدون ما أعبد لكم دينكم ولي دين
Verse 1: "Qul ya ayyuhal-kafirun" means?
"Say: O disbelievers!" A clear call to the disbelievers, addressing them by what they are.
Verse 2: "La a'budu ma ta'budun" means?
"I do not worship what you worship." Not now and not in the future.
Verse 3: "Wa la antum 'abiduna ma a'bud" means?
"Nor do you worship what I worship." Even if they worship Allah at times, worship mixed with shirk is not the worship of Allah that the Prophet does.
Verse 4: "Wa la ana 'abidun ma 'abadtum" means?
"Nor will I ever be a worshipper of what you have worshipped."
Verse 5: "Wa la antum 'abiduna ma a'bud" means?
"Nor will you be worshippers of what I worship."
Why are the verses repeated? Isn't that redundant?
No. The scholars, such as Ibn al-Qayyim, discussed this at length. One explanation is that the first pair (with verbs) denies the act itself, and the second pair (with nouns, "a worshipper") denies it as a fixed quality, something that could never be accepted from him or be part of who he is. So the second pair is stronger and more complete.
Verse 6: "Lakum dinukum wa liya din" means?
"For you is your religion, and for me is my religion."
Does this verse mean all religions are acceptable?
No. It is a declaration of freedom from them and their religion, not approval. Allah says: "Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him." [3:85] It means: I have nothing to do with your religion, and you will be held responsible for it.
What did the Prophet call this surah?
A declaration of freedom from shirk. He advised reciting it before sleeping for that reason. (Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi; hasan)
Which category of tawhid does it teach?
Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah (worship): the practical side of tawhid, keeping your worship pure and rejecting the worship of others. It matches the "reject falsehood, then affirm the truth" pattern of "La ilaha illa Allah".
Chapter 15: Surat al-Ikhlas (112)
What is the surah?
قل هو الله أحد الله الصمد لم يلد ولم يولد ولم يكن له كفوًا أحد
Verse 1: "Qul huwa-llahu ahad" means?
"Say: He is Allah, the One." Ahad means One and unique, with no partner and no equal in His Self, His Names, His Attributes or His Actions.
Verse 2: "Allahus-Samad" means?
"Allah, the Self-Sufficient Master." Ibn Abbas explained as-Samad as the Master who is perfect in His leadership, knowledge, wisdom and every Attribute, and to whom all creation turns in their needs. Other Salaf said it is the One who has no hollowness, who does not eat or drink. Both meanings are true of Allah.
Verse 3: "Lam yalid wa lam yulad" means?
"He does not beget, nor was He begotten." He has no child and no parent. This refutes the Christians, the Jews who said Uzayr is Allah's son, and the polytheists who said the angels are His daughters.
What does that negation affirm (as you learned in Principle 2.3)?
His complete independence, eternity and perfection. A child is needed by someone who will die and needs a successor or help, and Allah is far above that.
Verse 4: "Wa lam yakul-lahu kufuwan ahad" means?
"And there is none equal or comparable to Him." This negates tamthil completely, like "There is nothing like Him" [42:11].
Why is it called al-Ikhlas?
Because it is purely about Allah and His description, and because whoever believes in it has purified (akhlasa) his tawhid.
Why does it equal a third of the Qur'an?
The Prophet said it equals a third of the Qur'an. (Bukhari, from Abu Sa'id) Scholars explain that the Qur'an covers three kinds of content: rulings, stories (and news of the unseen), and tawhid. This surah is entirely about tawhid and Allah's Attributes. Reciting it does not replace reciting the whole Qur'an.
What happened with the Companion who always recited it in his prayer?
He led prayers and ended every recitation with it. When asked, he said, "It is the description of ar-Rahman, and I love to recite it." The Prophet said, "Tell him that Allah loves him." (Bukhari and Muslim, from Aishah) Loving the texts about Allah's Attributes is a sign of correct belief.
Which category of tawhid does it teach?
Tawhid al-Asma wa as-Sifat (and the knowledge side of tawhid). That is why it is paired with al-Kafirun: one teaches who Allah is, the other teaches how to worship Him alone.
Chapter 16: Surat al-Falaq (113)
What is the surah?
قل أعوذ برب الفلق من شر ما خلق ومن شر غاسق إذا وقب ومن شر النفاثات في العقد ومن شر حاسد إذا حسد
Verse 1: "Qul a'udhu bi Rabbil-falaq" means?
"Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak." Al-falaq is the dawn breaking through the darkness. The One who splits the night with light can split away every harm from you. (Some scholars said it covers everything Allah splits open, like seeds and the dawn.)
Verse 2: "Min sharri ma khalaq" means?
"From the evil of what He has created." This is general: every harmful creature, human, jinn or animal. It does not say creation is all evil, but from the evil found in it.
Verse 3: "Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab" means?
"And from the evil of darkness when it settles." The night, when harmful things spread and evil people move around. Aishah reported that the Prophet pointed at the moon and said, "Seek refuge with Allah from the evil of this; this is the ghasiq when it waqab." (At-Tirmidhi; authentic) The moon is the sign of the night.
Verse 4: "Wa min sharrin-naffathati fil-'uqad" means?
"And from the evil of those who blow on knots." The magicians (often women, or evil souls) who tie knots and blow on them while casting spells. It proves that magic is real and can harm, by Allah's permission.
Verse 5: "Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad" means?
"And from the evil of the envier when he envies." Envy is hating that a blessing reaches someone else. The harm comes when he acts on it, including through the evil eye.
What is this surah's place in protection?
The Prophet used to seek refuge from the jinn and the evil eye until the two surahs of refuge were revealed; then he used them and left everything else. (At-Tirmidhi; authentic)
Chapter 17: Surat an-Nas (114)
What is the surah?
قل أعوذ برب الناس ملك الناس إله الناس من شر الوسواس الخناس الذي يوسوس في صدور الناس من الجنة والناس
Verse 1: "Qul a'udhu bi Rabbin-nas" means?
"Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind."
Verse 2: "Malikin-nas" means?
"The King of mankind."
Verse 3: "Ilahin-nas" means?
"The God (the only One worthy of worship) of mankind."
How do these three Names connect to the three categories of tawhid?
Rabb points to Tawhid ar-Rububiyyah (He creates and manages). Malik points to His complete authority and His Names and Attributes. Ilah points to Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah (He alone is worshipped). You seek refuge with Him through all of them.
Verse 4: "Min sharril-waswasil-khannas" means?
"From the evil of the whisperer who withdraws." Satan whispers, and when Allah is remembered he withdraws and hides. When the person becomes heedless, he returns. (This was the explanation of Ibn Abbas.)
What is the practical lesson of "al-khannas"?
The cure for whispers, including in the prayer, is remembering Allah and seeking refuge with Him, not arguing with the whispers.
Verse 5: "Alladhi yuwaswisu fi sudurin-nas" means?
"Who whispers into the hearts (chests) of mankind."
Verse 6: "Minal-jinnati wan-nas" means?
"From among the jinn and mankind." Whisperers are from both. Allah says: "devils from among mankind and jinn, inspiring one another with adorned speech to deceive." [6:112] Evil companions can whisper as Satan does.
Why does al-Falaq use one Name for many evils, and an-Nas three Names for one evil?
Scholars like Ibn al-Qayyim noted this. Al-Falaq seeks refuge from harms to the body and worldly life. An-Nas seeks refuge from whispering, which harms the religion and the heart, which is a greater danger. So more of Allah's Names are used for the greater danger.
Review: Connecting It All
What pattern of tawhid runs through the whole prayer?
You open with "Allahu Akbar", declare in al-Fatihah "You alone we worship", glorify Him in ruku and sujud, testify "La ilaha illallah" in the tashahhud, and end with as-Salam, His Name. The whole prayer is tawhid in words and actions.
Where does the prayer use "negate the flaw, affirm the perfection"?
"Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdik" (free of flaws, and with praise), the tasbih in ruku and sujud, "La ilaha illallah" (negation, then affirmation), al-Kafirun (rejecting false worship) and al-Ikhlas (denying a son and an equal, affirming oneness).
Which Attributes of Allah do you affirm in the prayer?
Greatness (Allahu Akbar, al-'Adhim), highness (al-A'la), mercy (ar-Rahman ar-Rahim), ownership and kingship (Malik), hearing (Sami'Allah), forgiveness (al-Ghafur), praise and glory (Hamid, Majid), oneness and self-sufficiency (al-Ahad, as-Samad), and peace (as-Salam).
Which phrases are du'a for yourself?
"Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqim", "Rabbighfir li", the du'a between the prostrations, the four refuges before taslim, Abu Bakr's du'a, and any du'a in sujud.
Which phrases are for the Prophet, and what do they teach?
The salam on him in the tashahhud and the salah on him. They are du'as to Allah for him, not to him. They teach love for him, while "His servant and His Messenger" keeps that love within the limits of tawhid.
What is the prayer's message in one line?
Allah is greater than everything, so you worship Him alone, ask Him alone, glorify Him in humility, testify to His oneness and His Messenger, and leave in peace.
